Massage Therapy

Welcome to The Open Birdcage – Body Therapies

Remedial Massage is one of the oldest healing modalities and is still the most sought after therapy for pain and stress reduction. Stress is the leading cause of disease. Muscle tension can put stress on the body’s structural system and cause pain, injury, and long term damage to the body. It can also stress the cardiovascular system, nervous system, digestion system, and immune system, resulting in weaker, less-resistant health.

If you’ve never had a massage, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to treating you soon.

Call today to schedule an appointment and consider making massage a regular part of your health maintenance plan.

Swedish/Relaxation/Kahuna Massage

This relaxing therapeutic massage uses Swedish massage techniques which involve manipulation of soft tissues- muscles, ligaments, tendons, connective tissue and joint capsules. This massage is ideal for relaxing tense muscles, easing stress and tension, relieving pain, and improving sleep.

Hot Stones Massage

During a hot stone massage, the techniques of a regular massage are applied. Using Hot Stones allows me to get deeper into the muscles without the need to apply further pressure, the heat also helps increase your relaxation. Hot stone massage has specifically been associated with symptom relief in people with a variety of conditions, such as fybromyalgia and other autoimmune disorders.

Meditation & Massage Package

Allow your Mind & Body to be taken on a journey of healing and self-reflection.

During this session you will be guided through a powerful visualisation, helping you to overcome worry, stress and anxiety. You will then enjoy a Relaxation Massage accompanied with peaceful music, candles and gentle aromas, allowing for a deeper and more relaxing experience. This treatment will be completed with a soothing Herbal Tea, giving  you a few minutes of recovery before you go about your day.

Deep Tissue Massage and Trigger Point Therapy

This deep tissue massage works on the deeper layers of tension and provides a therapeutic benefit. Combined with Swedish techniques, focused massage is applied to the deeper muscles and connective tissue to relieve chronic pain and tension. This is ideal for those who prefer deeper muscular work or who are challenged by high levels of daily stress, and is especially suitable for athletes.

Aromatherapy Massage

This Aromatherapy Massage is massage therapy but with highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, added to the massage oil or lotion. Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress or improving emotionally related conditions.

Reiki Therapy

Reiki energy has an intelligence of its own. It flows naturally where it is needed mostly, by you. The energy does not come from me directly, I just create a channel for the energy to flow. The Reiki channel must be a clear vessel, I have therefore purified my own emotional & spiritual consciousness. This, combined with my sincere desire to heal creates the perfect circumstance to manifest health, harmony and balance in your life.

Your First Visit

Many people aren’t sure what to expect when they schedule their first massage, but let me assure you, there is nothing to be nervous about! Although no two massages are alike, there are some things that are typical to each session.

Your session will take place in a quiet, comfortable dimly lit environment. Soothing music is often played to help you relax. Prior to your session, you will be asked to fill out a health history form, which enable me to properly assess your massage needs. I will enquire as to why you are seeking massage therapy, and about any injuries or medical conditions you may have. If you have any skin sensitivities or allergies, that will be the time to let me know. I may also ask you for additional information that will help ensure that you have the most pleasant and successful session possible. I will excuse myself so that you can undress to whatever level you are comfortable with. You will then get on the table – either face up or face down – under the sheet and cover provided. During your session, you will be draped (covered) at all times, only the area being worked on will be exposed. A typical full-body session includes your back, legs, feet, hands, arms, shoulders and neck. You may request that I spend additional or less time on a specific area. Coconut oil is used and often aromatherapy oils, so you’ll be asked if you have any preferences or particular dislikes.

During the massage, please make sure to communicate with me about the pressure I am applying. I am normally quite aware of whether using light or deep pressure is appropriate in any given situation, however it is encouraged that you let me know how you feel. If you want more or less pressure, be sure to communicate that – your massage is all about you. When your massage session is complete, I will again leave the room so that you can get dressed. Sit up slowly and take your time getting dressed.

After your massage we will discuss your needs and my recommendations for your next treatment, which we can then schedule at your convenience. Please be sure to drink plenty of water after your massage. Over the next few days (after your treatment), you may experience soreness if you requested a deep tissue massage.

To alleviate any discomfort, apply an ice or heat pack to the area.

Please be sure to let me know about any level of discomfort you’ve experienced, so we can adjust the pressure or consider other options for your next session.

FAQs

What can I expect from a massage?
You can expect to have your massage in a safe, nurturing environment. You can expect to feel peaceful, totally relaxed and calm afterwards. You can expect to be listened to – you are the one who knows your body. I cannot “fix” you, since you are not broken. I can assist your body in finding its way to optimal health through stress-relief and relaxation. I view my clients as whole, and hold that vision for them.

What happens during a session?
You’ll start the session by filling out some confidential paperwork, and we will discuss your goals, even if it is just to relax and de-stress. You will then be left alone in the massage room to undress to your level of comfort. You’ll get on the massage table, where you will cover yourself up with the sheet and blankets. I don’t enter the room until you tell me that you are ready. There is music playing in the background, unless you prefer silence. When the massage is done, I leave the room for you to re-dress in private.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my session?
It helps to be well hydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of fluids the day before and day of your massage.

Is it OK to talk during my session?
That is totally up to you. I will occasionally ask a few questions, pertaining to your comfort level, and how you are feeling. I have learned that some people relax by talking, others prefer to have their massage in silence. It’s your massage – you get to decide if you want to talk or not. Often times people will start out talking, then “drift away” as the massage proceeds. Whatever helps you to relax the most is best.

How often should I get a massage?
That really depends on what your goals are, and your budget. I recommend getting a massage at least once or twice a month, as the effects are cumulative. A few of my clients come in once a week, most of them come in every other week, some every 3 weeks, and some once a month. All of them recognise the importance of self-care and the health benefits that they enjoy from receiving massage on a regular basis.

Should I refer my friends and family?
Yes, referrals are an important part of my business. I appreciate the trust you put in me and promise to take care of your friends and family as well as I take care of you.
