Massage Therapy
Welcome to The Open Birdcage – Body Therapies
Remedial Massage is one of the oldest healing modalities and is still the most sought after therapy for pain and stress reduction. Stress is the leading cause of disease. Muscle tension can put stress on the body’s structural system and cause pain, injury, and long term damage to the body. It can also stress the cardiovascular system, nervous system, digestion system, and immune system, resulting in weaker, less-resistant health.
If you’ve never had a massage, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to treating you soon.

Your First Visit
Many people aren’t sure what to expect when they schedule their first massage, but let me assure you, there is nothing to be nervous about! Although no two massages are alike, there are some things that are typical to each session.
Your session will take place in a quiet, comfortable dimly lit environment. Soothing music is often played to help you relax. Prior to your session, you will be asked to fill out a health history form, which enable me to properly assess your massage needs. I will enquire as to why you are seeking massage therapy, and about any injuries or medical conditions you may have. If you have any skin sensitivities or allergies, that will be the time to let me know. I may also ask you for additional information that will help ensure that you have the most pleasant and successful session possible. I will excuse myself so that you can undress to whatever level you are comfortable with. You will then get on the table – either face up or face down – under the sheet and cover provided. During your session, you will be draped (covered) at all times, only the area being worked on will be exposed. A typical full-body session includes your back, legs, feet, hands, arms, shoulders and neck. You may request that I spend additional or less time on a specific area. Coconut oil is used and often aromatherapy oils, so you’ll be asked if you have any preferences or particular dislikes.
During the massage, please make sure to communicate with me about the pressure I am applying. I am normally quite aware of whether using light or deep pressure is appropriate in any given situation, however it is encouraged that you let me know how you feel. If you want more or less pressure, be sure to communicate that – your massage is all about you. When your massage session is complete, I will again leave the room so that you can get dressed. Sit up slowly and take your time getting dressed.
After your massage we will discuss your needs and my recommendations for your next treatment, which we can then schedule at your convenience. Please be sure to drink plenty of water after your massage. Over the next few days (after your treatment), you may experience soreness if you requested a deep tissue massage.
To alleviate any discomfort, apply an ice or heat pack to the area.
Please be sure to let me know about any level of discomfort you’ve experienced, so we can adjust the pressure or consider other options for your next session.
FAQs
What can I expect from a massage?
You can expect to have your massage in a safe, nurturing environment. You can expect to feel peaceful, totally relaxed and calm afterwards. You can expect to be listened to – you are the one who knows your body. I cannot “fix” you, since you are not broken. I can assist your body in finding its way to optimal health through stress-relief and relaxation. I view my clients as whole, and hold that vision for them.
What happens during a session?
You’ll start the session by filling out some confidential paperwork, and we will discuss your goals, even if it is just to relax and de-stress. You will then be left alone in the massage room to undress to your level of comfort. You’ll get on the massage table, where you will cover yourself up with the sheet and blankets. I don’t enter the room until you tell me that you are ready. There is music playing in the background, unless you prefer silence. When the massage is done, I leave the room for you to re-dress in private.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my session?
It helps to be well hydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of fluids the day before and day of your massage.
Is it OK to talk during my session?
That is totally up to you. I will occasionally ask a few questions, pertaining to your comfort level, and how you are feeling. I have learned that some people relax by talking, others prefer to have their massage in silence. It’s your massage – you get to decide if you want to talk or not. Often times people will start out talking, then “drift away” as the massage proceeds. Whatever helps you to relax the most is best.
How often should I get a massage?
That really depends on what your goals are, and your budget. I recommend getting a massage at least once or twice a month, as the effects are cumulative. A few of my clients come in once a week, most of them come in every other week, some every 3 weeks, and some once a month. All of them recognise the importance of self-care and the health benefits that they enjoy from receiving massage on a regular basis.
Should I refer my friends and family?
Yes, referrals are an important part of my business. I appreciate the trust you put in me and promise to take care of your friends and family as well as I take care of you.
